Cognitive-Behavioral Art Therapy for Improving Self-Esteem in a School Refusing Adolescent : A Case Study

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of cognitive-behavioral art therapy on self-esteem of an adolescent who refused to attend a school. The subject of the study was a junior middle school girl, and this cognitive-behavioral art therapy program, which consists of 14 sessions once per week, lasted from December, 2021 to April, 2022 at A art therapy institute. To inspect changes of self-esteem, first, self-esteem test was conducted before and after program, in follow-up, with every 3 sessions, and the results were compared. And KSD was conducted before and after program, in follow-up, and the results were compared and analyzed. Second, the contents related self-esteem in reflection on sessions were compared and analyzed. The results of study were as follows. First, there were positive changes in self-esteem test and KSD. Second, positive changes were shown in the reflection contents related self-esteem on sessions. The positive result of the study were derived from activities of cognitive reconstruction of cognitive-behavioral art therapy. And it was derived from changing the focus of the program from problem-based to strength-based. Based on these results, the implications and limitations of this study were discussed.
